Deers....

Thank you again for kind comments - it is so very kind of you.  I will be blog visiting tomorrow all being well (where does the time go....).  Thank you for asking where all this stuff is kept in between times - it is mainly, but not completely, contained here.  I ventured into this cupboard today - I have filled two bin liners ready to take to the CS today.  I am getting a grip!

However I am rather partial to a nice deer.

So these are some more old photographs of mine from Flickr and one or two more recent ones


The photograph above reminds me to do a post about seasonal aprons one day



These bowls are not uncommon I think - from the CS a few years ago, also in blue!



I have a 'farm' of plastic deers - well why not.  These are also CS finds over the years.  Dear Mary from The Vintage Cottage sent me the WONDERFUL deer wrapping paper that you can just see in the back of this photograph - it is quite lovely.



This fabric dates from the late 1930s I think - this little scrap I used to adorn the front a Christmas stocking that I made a few years ago -  I decorated the top with some lovely old lace and some old buttons





I will tell the tale of these very, very delicarto glass deer.  Two summers ago (I like to hold back until the time is right to share something!)  I went, as I always do, to the May Day Fayre : lots and lots of stalls with plants, cakes and old stuff.  On one stall was an old shoe box full of kernickerty  kerknackerties - glass boats, chinese figures and I could just see a deer head poking out.  The deer was 50p but I could have the box for £3:

 'I don't really want the box thank you all the same'....
'Oh go on we need to get rid of stuff'...
'So do I!'

I handed over my £3...cough, cough..... and carried the box under my arm (bike basket was full of plants.....and cake) whilst steering my bike. The bike and I rattled all the way home.  When I reached base camp I found not one deer but two!  How these have survived undamaged for years (and the bike journey) I do not know.


I had never seen anything like these before so I Googled 'glass deers' and found this information about them .  They are little mercury glass survivors from the 1920/30s so deserve their place in chez Cootard I think.


Ever since that summer they have lived on the mantle piece - enjoying the space around them and taking in the fresh air devoid of shoe box atmos!



I will be putting holly in them for  this month

    Jenny deerest, I love deers too! Do you remember those lucozade coloured glass bambi type deers that you could get? I had several somewhere but goodness know where they got to. I can imagine they would be quite collectable now.Loving your deerlicious collection.XX

      I do indeed remember those glass deer - I still have part of one of them (they were linked together by a little chain) but it is without legs or possibly head! The local CS has a display of them too at the moment

    well I love the deer - but oh your cupboard, it is the cupboard of my dreams. It is like the Narnia of Christmas cupboards, I imagine if you squeezed your way inside you could go on and on and come out in Christmas. If I had such a cupboard, I think I'd open it up all year just to be transported to Christmas land!

    Well what a find indeed. You've inspired me to retrieve my deer book ends that I found at the Sally Anne awhile back and give them a place of honour (somewhere LOL just need to find a spot). I too am partial to deer except for the ones that frequently come out of my woodlot and feast on my garden like it is some kind of salad bar (don't get me started)...or destroy the bird feeder (I told you not to get me started) Other wise they are quite nice :)

      Oh deer - I can imagine that the novelty would wear off, especially if your garden is being affected. Sorry to get you started all over again!

      Thank you as always Barbra - the purple berries belong to a callicarpa that was my mums - when she died I moved it to our garden and it has flourished ever since. My holly tree does not have many berries so the purple ones have to make do!

    How deerlightful! Your glass deer remind me of a chap who blew glass - blowed glass? - was a glass blower on Southend sea front. We used to stand and gawp at him for ages, my little sister et moi. Happy days!

    Deer Jenny,Lovely post as ever my deer!I have a few deer too,my latest are a gorgeous pair of brass deers! I also have a flowery deer,and a felt deer and a sweet little plastic deer with a tiny vase that I use on my Christmas table. I wish Crown Derby manufactured deers I would love one but think they would be too deer for my purse!oh deer is this a case of overdeering the pudding?!! 'Bye for now Pam.P.S When out with hubby one year we sat on a bench to eat our sandwiches and on hearing a strange noise peeped over the wall and saw a herd of deer!!I like to think they belonged to Santa!!

    Thay are wonderful, I'm a deer fan too....sadly I dropped the one I've had since I was little and broke off her foot, so a little super glue is needed! Good job it wasn't glass like your beauties! (You really do know how to grab a bargain don't you!!!) :) x

      I have been very lucky indeed over the years - but also most of it comes from a time when people really only wanted new (late 70s and 80s) I think.

    Deerlightful post Jenny :) Ideerly I too would have a Christmas cupboard, but instead I have one measly drawer to keep my Xmas goodies in so Christmas decs chez Knitsofacto must be kept to a minimum. In consequence my Deercember is in fact deerless. Sad but true.

    Oh deer you are making me all Christmassy here in Hawaii!! We do have deer here, but they are a nuisance, unlike your gorg glass ones! They are axis deer and have run amok in all of our wild areas, along with the horrible wild pigs. One has to be careful hiking in the hinterlands hereabouts. Yay for boxes full of lovely surprises!
