..Ere the winter storms begin....

It really is autumn now isn't it.  No escaping the fact.  The heating will need to be turned on and fires stoked. I love that we have seasons and that there are changes to look forward to (and to dread)!

I am fond of 'seasonal' displays - sad I know.  So there are certain things that are dragged out of various cupboards for certain times of the year - this tin being one of them.

The gingham is an old apron - seasonal aprons.....

The Victorian scrap I have had for decades and always loved the colours.

I chose this tablecloth because it has embroidered ears of corn on it - but not a very good photograph.

Autumnal bunting with blackberries..

Leafy china is suitable for this season!  Here is last years autumn post which shows some of our leafy china - not all......

Ending with a photograph of an illustration from a wonderful book I bought from a charity shop five or so  years ago. This is from 'The Children's Book of Gardening' published in 1913. A very unassuming cover but the glories inside make up for that.  As the cover was grubby (so I made a little slip cover from vintage embroidery....that was also damaged!) I don't think that anyone possibly had looked inside the book so it cost only one or two pounds. The text is a real delight to read - witty and clever - Bronte was particularly fond of my reading of it when she was little.

Just ending by saying it was lovely meeting up with real life bloggers at the 'Vintage and Very Nice Fair' last Saturday.  I laughed and laughed most of the day (dipped a bit by late afternoon).  How wonderful to chat and how wonderful that people were coming up to me and said that they read my bloggity blog.  At one point I felt quite a celebrity...oh dear that is not a great aspiration is it....I feel some surgical enhancements coming on........

  1. What a wonderful idea to change your displays to fit the seasons - oh that I had the china, etc, that you do. I love the autumnal plates. How original to read a book of gardening to your daughter when she was small. Has it has any influence I wonder? Philippa xx

  2. Hello Jenny:
We really do love your autumn items and think that it is a wonderful idea to bring things out according to the season. And you do have some very attractive and decorative things.

As for the illustrations from your children's gardening book, they are indeed superb. Perhaps at some point you will post more of them? We do hope so.

  9. What a lovely Autumnal post Jenny... what a sweet book... I've always rather loved Autumn, the changing leaves, long wrapped up walks kicking leaves then home to a nice warm fire! But it also reminds me of my Grandma it was her favourite month, so the season I miss her most. I look forward to the time I will be able to enjoy those walks again! So lovely to finally meet you on Saturday, I totally forgot to get a bag for a friend's birthday from you so I do hope you we might be able to tempt you back? smiles Cass x

  13. Ohhhhh! Just love so much in this post. Clever idea to make a slipcover for an old book, especially such a pretty one. Adore that gardening print too, it is so lovely. And also really love that leafy china with the little bird, gorgeous! I love your seasonal displays, do not change! I think that it keeps us in harmony to not just accept seasons, but to celebrate them all. x

    1. Thank you kindly dearie. We have to go with the flow at the end of the day don't we - make the best of darker evenings and shorter days, get the mending and fixing done and throw logs on the fire.

  17. Good plans getting out seasonal autumnal displays, looking good Jenny as always.

Love the header shot too, it made me want to walk in the room and sit awhile.

When people ask if I'm Bobo or say I read your blog it makes my girls laugh as they think it surreal that people we don't know read all my waffle.

    1. Oh Pam - I do indeed remember that book covering - it was an exciting thing for me to do when I went back to school! I will dig out my history note books as they were my favourites to cover. I generally used old wallpaper to cover mine - blast that I never thought of fabric at that time!
