Stand away from the scissors.....

Ah.... I am pleased to read that my wistful nostalgic posts strike a chord with your good selves.  More colour montages to appear over time. Also glad to read that I am not alone with Enigma coding....

As you may know I  possess only  one pair of shoes (last time I wrote about this I had two pairs but since then one set have met their demise...). I am not overly fond of 'proper' shopping and have extra aversion to shoe shopping.  I do have lots and lots of bags (and purses....). . I have only shown a flavour of them here (!!!).  I am sure that if I could make my own shoes I would also own lots and lots of shoes...
I have also mentioned previously my 'bird' bag of which I am very fond ("I wish that she would get to the point...").  A few years ago I made this bag above out of an old tapestry and I have been making them ever since - these are my robust daily shopping type bags.

A few years ago I also made this bag....sorry that the photograph is not brilliant - this is my 'Deer Bag' used intermittently but extra focus around Christmas time when 'Deers' are in (seasonal bags, seasonal tablecloths, seasonal purses.....). Twinned with some deliciouso fabrico from the ?1930s (rich linen and wonderful rich pattern) ("We are still waiting...")

Dug out an old photo of some car boot purchases from September 2010 (that precise only because the photographs are dated automatically!).  A lovely soft tapestry with an equally lovely rose fabric bag (from the 1930s again perhaps?) and a complete roll of rose fabric (from the 1950s the seller told me...I have it  logged that it cost £5 for the entire roll!).

The one below is a travelling bag - suitable for longer journeys to Bath for example...("Do you think that she is ok?")

Also a few years ago I made the bag below - if I remember correctly this tapestry cost about a pound (as they usually are) - this is known as my 'Green and Pleasant Land' bag.  ("What! You name your bags"!!!)

A robust and sturdy number and just right for milk and cheese purchases

I have been watching this tapestry for sale on ebay and it sold for £38.....today I am unpicking ALL tapestry bags...what the blazes have I been thinking of.....ho ho
"Now we understand...."

PS Due to kind words I am quite determined to make an extra, extra nice embroidered purse and sell it!!! Once I have figured how much that would be...I will not be on Dragon's Den any time soon....

  1. Hello Jenny:
These tapestry bags are simply lovely and look so wonderfully faded and slightly worn, just as we should like them to be.

We have a number of tapestry pictures, several of English Cathedrals, worked by one of our grandmothers in the years just before and after the war.

    1. Your tapestries sound delightful - the best sort are those which have a family connection I think.

  4. I was flicking through my Mollie Makes last night when I squealed, Mr Bea promptly jumped almost dropping his tea, there was your lovely work room! I dream of a room filled to the rafters with vintage fabric! Now you have me looking at tapestries! How dare you! I can't have anymore addictions! I jest, great stuff! Ada :)

  5. Ah bags... sigh. Particularly drawn to the travelling and green and pleasant land bags - would quite like to climb into the scene on the latter like a Mary Poppins drawing. x

  7. Love all of those bags, particularly the top one. I'm just off to ebay land to see if I can find any bargains. I'm actually working on two tapestries at the moment, one a formal garden and one of bunnies. As my walls look like an art gallery already and I have been told by Mr VG no more pictures, perhaps I should make them into bags instead - it could save our marriage!!!!!!!

    1. Sadly tapestries turn up quite often - just like those embroideries - so much work and then discarded. Please start a rescue service and get making bags!

  9. Wonderful bags. Makes it worth trekking round the shops just to show off the bags. I've got a UFO tapestry somewhere from years back. It kept making my eyes go funny doing it hence it being banished to the bottom of the UFO cupboard. Shame really because I would love to make it into a bag like yours. Philippa xx

  12. Super duper bags. I also sew with tapestries - love to use them they are so magical. The Travelling to Bath bag is fantastic!!

The other day I saw a bunch of patchwork cushions, made from vintage embroideries, selling for £40 each, in a dingy room in a junk shop in Hastings, and I thought your stuff is so much nicer, you could deffo sell them and make some extra pennies.

I uploaded a photo I took for you to see - I've put it on Flickr and will leave it there for a few days - not the best piccie because it was a dark room and only had the phone camera but you get the idea.

    1. Thank you so much wendz - I looked at the photo the other day and reminds me of some that I made a few years ago (I will dig out some old photos) - they sold for 8.99 I think so a little bit cheaper. It was a good way of using smaller pieces but as usual it wasn't really financially worth it sadly. That said wendz I really will give etsy a try I think. Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to do that wendz

  14. The bags are really lovely. I especially like your "green and pleasant land" bag, although I probably would have named it the "Psalm 23" bag. ;-)

  16. When it comes to photography there are so many accessories you can own, however in my opinion none of them are as useful as a good tripod. If you're into landscape photography then owning a tripod is a must. tripod for phone
